Buying a new AKG microphone today...

Today I'm going to get one more microphone at Easy Music. I've been happy with the AKG that I bought last week, or was it a couple of weeks ago? Anyway, I've been happy with how this 59 dollar microphone records (it comes with a free 15 ft cable, and a mic stand clip). I hope it's still on sale...

I want to start doing stuff like this... whatever you can get out of the computer and into a speaker.

I wonder what kind of reaction we'd get if we started playing electro dance music? I'm really thinking about it. I want to keep LINUS, as LINUS, but I really want to start doing dance music. What'd you think?

We have most of the equipment to start making this stuff, I think I just can't motivate myself enough, to start making this kind of music because I can't really see the four of us playing live. Still listening to Erland Oye's Every Party while I quietly plan an attack. Been listening to what's been created so far for our second CD and I really like it. There's still a lot of work to do, and I'm dreading the work, but I have the time to do it right now so I should just suck it up. Wasn't that Polysics song good? I'm still humming it in my head. New song, "Group Theory."

And now for a video from Polysics, a japanese no-wave band. I want those glasses...

Another gem from chris' blog. This band is called Polysics. When we first started playing music, a few people told me that we sounded(or looked) like this band. I think it's the fact that they use a Nord Lead. Anyway, here's another video from Polysics. Now if I could only find that Hana Suka No Dance Party video...

Next Door was packed last night

Last night I went to Next Door and saw VAX, Ecto Gamut, and My Ex is Dead. VAX sounded good and put on a tight set. Ecto Gamut was even tighter, and My Ex is Dead, apart from sounded tight, put on a great show. That fish-head was genius. Overall, it was a very cool show. I really need to start taking a camera to these shows. Seriously, the fish head was genius.

In LINUS news, I'm busy working on the new website, we have a band meeting sometime this weekend, and we'll be recording guitar parts next week.

That's all for now,
David

I can't stop listening to this song!

My friend chris blogged his list of the best music videos of 2006. I've watched only a handful of them but this one by Peter, Bjorn, and John is by far the best. I can't keep myself from hitting the play button again and again after it finishes. The video's cool too.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I posted that image last christmas and it still seems appropriate. This year my brother built a Festivus pole. It's standing next to the christmas tree, which by comparison seems garish. I'm starting to see the appeal of a minimalist pole. Next up, the Airing of Grievances. Well Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night...

Okay, now it's working.... it's christmas eve. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.

Ok, so we're starting the move to our next website. It might take a while to move all of the LINUS user accounts to the new website but we'll get it done sometime in 2007, just joking, no, really, it might take a really long time... email me if you have any questions about the move. david@linustheband.com

Testing Testing, the blog has not been working for the past few days...

is this post working????

Good News and New Equipment

Found out today that I passed all my classes. I am now a certified college grad. Today I went to easy music and bought some new recording gear. I got a behringer mixer, an akg microphone, and a mic stand.

End of the Year

I just came in to work from finishing the last final of my last year in college (fingers crossed). I'm not walking so don't even ask. I want to take a whole week off from doing anything, work, school, whatever. I want to just sit around and be as lazy as I want for one full week.

We've finished recording the bed tracks of almost all of the songs that are going to be on our next CD. I've been listening to it in the car and on my ipod. I'm trying to figure out the order of the tracks. So anyway, it's so nice to not have to worry about any homework assignments right now. I'm eating a piece of cake and some mango cheesecake to celebrate.

Yeah for me.

Battlestar Galactica

It's the weekend before finals and what am I doing, I'm working on the new LINUS website. I have the entire thing designed out and today I'm going to work out the code to make it all work correctly. It isn't too pretty, but we'll work on it as it goes. I mainly want to be able to interact with fans and stuff.

Another thing that's taking a lot of my time this weekend has been Battlestar Galactica.

Now, I usually don't fall into watching a scifi series that's been produced by *cough* *cough* USA Networks, but this show's got a lot of buzz on the internet. So I borrowed season 1 from the library. It's 5 discs total with 4 episodes on each disc (i hope, but i haven't checked yet). Think of LOST meets Star Wars. I've only watched 2 discs so far but, if you're looking for some good scifi, rent Battlestar Galactica. I wonder if Serenity or Firefly is anything like BSG?

Ok, I'll be posting more soon...

We have a show at Next Door on Tuesday!

Rocky Balboa, are you going to see it?

This trailer makes the movie look really good. I think I might even see it in the theater...

I'm thinking of scrapping this blog

well actually, I'm thinking of starting from scratch. I want to make a new website but honestly I just haven't had the time to do it with school, work, and recording the new album. I've been listening to new music. Well actually, not as often as I'd like to. I'm listening to a lot of podcasts lately. some that I really don't want to mention here. anyway, we had a good show at pipeline. We were all really glad that our friend Dylan got to see us play a show before heading back to seattle. thanks for coming to that show dylan!

im thinking that we're going to reinstate the linus messageboard once again. i think im getting sick of only hearing myself talk on this thing. only one more week of school! come on now! I promise that a new website will be up soon (once school's over!).

This week I've been frantic. You see, I was carrying around all of the LINUS material in a DVD case so I could carry all of the CDs in one place. Now that all the songs have been moved onto my ipod, I have no need to carry around the DVD case. Well, on Monday I couldn't find the case anywhere. I imagined it falling out of my bag at school, it being picked up by some student, taking it back to their dorm room, and listening to all the songs... I found it last night in my room under some papers. I'm listening to pandora right now. I'm so sick of hearing emo music. I want to do dance music.

Show at Pipeline Cafe tonight!

Cherry, not a berry....

I went to Next Door last night and I saw the Malcognitas (and scored a CD, woot woot!), happy music man, and ctrl-alt-delete. This was a surprisingly good combination of bands and it made for a very entertaining time. If I'm not mistaken, this was happy music man's first show. I thought it was awesome, although a few parts were a little hard to take. Pots and pans and an acoustic guitar... what more do you need. If they put out a CD, I'd buy it.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Finished 6 more

We all got there at 7pm and we rerecorded a song called "Listen UP!" We're calling it the choke out song cause that's what it sounds like. Anyway, last night we also rerecorded Sasha, On a Holiday, and You Talk too Much.

Nik's going to Kauai for Thanksgiving so we're going to take a recording break for a week. We're playing a show at Pipeline next Wednesday with Kai Roots and another band who's name escapes me right now.

I'm going to continue writing music and finishing up parts this weekend, after I eat mad turkey. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Walter's Karaoke

Yesterday I copied a bunch of audio files that I want to use on the DVD. I also found some songs I want on the CD. Not sure if they'll make it on, but they're there. They're in one of the three folders on my desktop: New LINUS Album, LINUS DVD, and B-sides.

I need to digitize the footage from my camera to start making the DVD. I've been recording footage of random things. I have a feeling that the DVD is going to be of the "making of" sort. I wanted it to be ambient LINUS, but I think it'd be more interesting(cohesive) if there's a point to it. I'll post more photos soon.

See everyone in the studio tomorrow at 9am sharp! Unless you want to get breakfast before... call me.

Last Night

Last night we recorded "I left Home" and "SOSO."

So we're really recording tonight

Last time I posted, we didn't make it into the studio. Tonight we're going to start recording. We are getting ready to put out a CD wtih 13 songs. I'll post some photos if I remember to take my camera. Here's a devendra banhart video to get us all into the mood to record:

This is kind of what we're doing tonight:

We start recording tonight at 7pm

Tonight we're going to lay down a few tracks for the new CD.

6 hours in the studio just to tune the drums, this album's going to be the shit!

I just got back home from Highway Recording Studios on the ridge. Stan's still there with Phil working on getting the drums just right. We start recording on Monday. Here are some photos I took today.

I started writing out the songs that I want on this album... These three triplets looked like a good visual-start to the project. EDIT.

Back in the studio, what, two years later? Three? No, it couldn't be.

For this album I'll be using a combination of amplifiers. Stan just got this vintage peavey that I was playing around with today. It's got a solid state AND tubes!

Stan had to test out the drums to make sure the levels were right.

But before we setup the drums I had to go outside and polish the cymbals. Ah, the life of a rock star. Some of the cymbals were getting so hot in the sun, the polish was caking off. I almost dropped the ride cymbal when I tried to pick it up. HOT HOT HOT. Ok, so that's pretty much it for today. We start recording on Monday. Be on time!

It's too early for a Saturday morning....

It's almost 10:30am and I'm loading up the car with new drum heads and a few new tracks cued up on the ps-04 (I'm going to stop referring to it as such, from now on I'll call it the PS). Anyway, where was I, I'm loading up the car with the final instruments we'll need in the studio. Even though I have not use for it yet, I bought a "potato flute" at Music Mac yesterday. I also got some xylophone mallets, cymbal polish, and an acoustic guitar strap.

I need to leave now to get there on time, see you later. It's on!

"Ain't it Strange" - Dr. Dog is one of my favorite bands of all time.

Wikipedia says this about Dr. Dog:

"Dr. Dog is a psychedelic rock band from Philadelphia consisting of members Scott McMicken (A.K.A. Taxi), Toby Leaman (Tables), Zach Miller (Text), Juston Stens (Trouble), and Sukey Jumps (Thanks). Past members include Doug O'Donnell (Truck), Ted Mark (Today), and Andrew Jones (Trial). DR. Dog has explained that friends of the band also receive nicknames, which are drawn from various aspects of their lives and personalities (Jones, for example, is a certified lawyer). Their sound has been compared to that of various 1960s pop bands, especially the Beatles and Doo-wop, as well as The Flaming Lips."

I don't agree with the flaming lips reference, well actually, I don't want to. I don't like the Flaming Lips anymore. I don't like the singer.

We've scheduled recording sessions for next week Monday night. I have to shine up the cymbals and buy new drum heads for my drums. I finally got that ps-o4. It's so small it fits in the palm of my hand. Some one stopped me on the street and asked me where they could buy one. They thought it was a home-made ipod.

This weekend I worked on the vocals for "So I set Out."

Tonight on Mariner's Ridge: Powwows and Particulars

Ever have something that you wanted fall right into your lap? That's the kind of process we went through with our last CD. Each step in getting the songs off of our shitty little demo recordings and onto a fully produced and mastered Compact Disc seemed to come too easy.

This time, we're thinking it through a little more, more conniving, more calculated, more mischievous, more LINUS! We wrote the songs, now it's time to record! Tonight at 7pm we're hiking up Mariner's Ridge to powwow and begin the planning of the next LINUS! CD.

I want to call it “WhiteMarks on a WhiteWall.”

Now we have a manager. Now we have a clear plan. This is going to be fun. I'll be blogging the progress of the CD as it... progresses.

Is it illegal to create a jukebox online that plays songs that aren't mine?

I'm thinking about making one. Today's weather sucks. It's been raining since I got up with no chance of it letting up.

"Do they know it's Halloween?"

Cool video I found online. It's really long... But I think it's cool.
Is that David Cross' voice? I think there's a Beck song in it or something.... it's cool.

"One by one I'll knock you out." new Beck video directed by Michel Gondry

Happy Halloween!

I don't even have a costume yet... But I'm sure I can find one at savers or something. But they're probably going to be packed tonight. I'm feeling star wars insipred after I saw this photo online today:

EDIT: I think he's supposed to be Inigio Montoya from "The Princess Bride." And after a little digging, I found out that Mandy Patkin, the actor who played Montoya in TPB is also in "Dead Like Me." cool.

I like halloween as much as the next guy but what I really like are ghost stories and ghost photos. Here are a few of the best photos I've seen in a while. They just give off that creepy vibe. I've never liked orb photos though. I want to see a face!

What are you doing tonight? Next Door? See you downtown tonight!

Summing up last week. Planning the next month...

Last week was hectic for LINUS. We played a bunch of shows at a bunch of venues. You'll notice that we're taking a few weeks off from playing live shows while we record our second CD. That's right, we're going to start recording this week.

A bunch of people have been asking me what's going to be on the next CD. I think they mean, "Which songs are going to be on the next CD?" I don't really know what we're going to put on the CD but we have some choices. I think we're going to record everything then, pick which ones work the best.

I was talking to Ben from The Crud at Ana Bananas the other night and I told him that we're thinking about making a double disc album. I think this album is going to be very different from the first one. (if I have my way)

We have our hands in a bunch of different things as a band right now. I don't even know how much sense this post makes, I just wanted to post something after those two shows on one night. That was fun, but it was hectic. I want to start playing sit-down shows. The DVD is going REALLY well. I have a Adobe Encore DVD manual here on my desk that I'm going to read later on today.

I've been showing the start of the DVD to some people and the response has been good so far. I think it's going to be great. So I guess, this post is about how we're going to take a little break before we play more shows. I think we'll get the songs to disc, burn it, then release it.

Back to back shows tonight at Detox and Ana Bananas

Tonight we're playing at two different venues. It's Friday night and I think we'll get a good response. We play at Detox at 8pm and we play last at Ana Bananas, probably around 11pm. See you there.

Deck Chairs and Cigarettes

Last night was fun. Only thing though, I sat down at my computer to google some of the artists in the music videos that I saw last night. One problem, I don't remember any of them, only bits and pieces, twinkle star? hana suka no dance?

What was the name of the South Korean soul band? The video with flying papyas and the singing drummer. I want their CD. They remind me of "Tokyo No. 1 Soul Set."

And I want that japanese dance music one where the two girls are petting the dear then the disappear into that bowling ball bag...

Do you remember any band names? email me

We've been nominated for a... for a... Hawaii Underground Music Award! Cast your vote via Myspace now to help us win this! Wednesday is the last day!

When we played at Detox the other night, Otto was handing out voting ballots for the Hawaii Underground Music Awards. No, seriously, it's going to be a "red carpet" event. LINUS has been nominated for two awards! Yes!

I don't know about you but I had no problem voting for LINUS as "Best CD" and "Best Indie Band!" You can do your part to see LINUS win this award by casting your votes with a myspace message by logging into your myspace account and sending a message to http://www.myspace.com/theundergroundmusicawards

We'll be keeping our fingers crossed!

LAST DAY TO VOTE IS THIS WEDNESDAY 10-25-06!

I just read an article featuring LINUS in Mililani High School's newspaper, "The Trojan Times"

Nik gave this interview a few weeks back to Mililani Highschool student Caitlin Kubota. Thanks for the press MHS.

By Caitlin Kubota
view the original article here

Over the years, Hawaii’s alternative and indie music scene has slowly been growing. In spite of how small it is compared to mainland venues, bands are still able to make a name for themselves among the local rock crowd. Olivia the Band, Push the Pedal, and Pennylane are just a few of the more well-known groups, but now joining their ranks is “Linus!”

Linus! began in the spring of 2001 when singer David Neely put up “musicians wanted” signs. Bassist Nikolaus Daubert answered the call and met Neely on the roof of his University of Hawaii dorm along with seven other musicians. “A couple of (guys) played guitars, somebody had a bongo drum, and girls were singing, so we literally had an eight person jam. And Dave and I were just kind of like ‘Whoa.’ ... we kind of made a connection,” recalled Daubert.

At first Neely and Daubert casually met to play a few of the melodies Neely had written, but wanting to become a serious band, the duo decided to establish a web site. In need of a name Neely had suggested “Linus” after a song called “Star Fruits of Linus.” It turns out that Neely had misheard the lyric, but in spite of popular belief, the band is not named after the famous Peanuts character. Keyboardist Danmerle Capati and Drummer Stanley Hardjadinata joined the band shortly after.

With Radiohead as a main musical influence and a drummer with a heavy metal background, the band’s music is a smooth mix of indie and rock and roll. However, their catchy melodies and lyrics of heartbreak give their music a pop twist. In addition to Radiohead, Linus! has been compared to The Strokes and Weezer, but Daubert admits that TLC’s album “Crazy Sexy Cool” is his own little guilty pleasure.

Over the last five years, Linus! has acquired a long and impressive list of accomplishments. They have opened for numerous headliners such as Hot Hot Heat, Motion City Soundtrack, My Chemical Romance and most recently She Wants Revenge. In 2003, they took third place in Hawaii’s annual Battle of the Bands Competition. Unsatisfied, they came back in 2004 and won first place. “That was nice, kind of makes us feel validated, you know?” commented Daubert on the experience. Despite being unsigned, Linus! released their full-length studio album The Construction in 2005. The band also went on two tours, an east coast tour where they played gigs in Philadelphia and Delaware, and the more recent west coast tour where they visited Seattle and San Francisco.

But Linus! is far from finished; trying to expand their music, Capati transitions from keyboard to guitar for their second CD, which they are in the midst of recording. In light of their positive response on the mainland, the band has hopes of branching out and unfortunately for Hawaii fans, is planning a possible move to Seattle.

“We are definitely happy with what we’ve accomplished here, but we feel like we kind of topped out (with) what you could do with our kind of music here. So we kind of have eyes on moving, possibly to Seattle because we know a lot of people there. Maybe even next year, I don’t want to jinx it because I’m definitely the one most pushing for it,” Daubert explained.

“But I think that everyone else kind of sees potential. Because when you live there you can take a road trip and play in another city. Here we’ve literally played every venue. There is no such thing as a new spot. I love playing for people who know our music, but it’s kind of nice to play somewhere else, where no one’s heard you because you feel like you have to impress them again. So our plan is definitely to expand,” continued Daubert on the future of Linus!

As the number of Linus! fans grow, it will be no surprise when this indie-rock band hits it big on the mainstream. Working their way up the musical ladder, Linus! is well on their way to being a headliner with underground bands vying to be their opening act.

Films and Folding Chairs

Well tonight's the night for films and folding chairs, unless they want us to stand and watch this 2 hour thing... It starts at 7pm.

Yeah, that's right, if you don't know what's going on tonight, read my earlier post below. I talked a few people into going early tonight to watch "an eclectic mix of new music videos from Japan, Korea, Cambodia, the Philippines, Israel, France and beyond!" So we'll be there early. I hope they want to eat at Mini Village or garden or whatever...

Power Out and the HIFF

So if you went to our show at Detox this weekend you would have witnessed us play a couple of songs, then you would have seen the amp blow out, watch us scramble to fix it, then end our set early.

I'd personally like to apologize for having to call it quits early but if you feel like you were short changed at our last show, make it a point to come out to the next show we have on Tuesday. We're playing a show at Next Door downtown. But that's only half the story.

Before we play at Next Door, there's a Honolulu International Film Festival (HIFF) thing going on in Next Door. It's called "Festival Video Ipod." Anyway, they're going to show music videos from all around asia and hawaii. Should be cool and I think it's only $5. Come early for the films, stay late for the real deal.

And while I'm talking about the film festival, here are the films that I want to see:

hello?

Apt

Chopsticks

Dog Bite Dog

Enemy

First Love

Folklore Restaurant

I'll Call You

Isabella

Made of Music - The Story of John Cruz

Memories of Matsuko

Nightmare Detective

Paprika

But the best film out of all of those looks like it's going to be "Yo Yo Girl Cop."

Anderson Le wrote, "An undercover police detective embedded in a private school is blown to pieces in Shibuya. The detective had been investigating a popular underground website called Enola Gay, an anonymous blog with an ominous counter, ticking down toward an unknown event. Cue in a young girl from New York's mean streets who is arrested and transferred to Japan, at the behest of the Tokyo Police Force. Only a hardened girl with killer instincts can infiltrate this vile plot. Assigned the codename, Asamiya Saki, she's put in a schoolgirl uniform and given her secret weapon - a yo-yo of insurmountable power!

Based on the manga, YO YO GIRL COP spawned the trend for schoolgirl detectives using an everyday device as a weapon or investigative tool (CELLPHONE GIRL COP is a popular TV series). Starring J-idol Aya Matsuura and featuring a few Morning Musume as the baddies - it's an otaku fever dream on the big screen!"

Here's the trailer:

See you on Tuesday at Next Door!

Tonight we're actually playing a new song, "Listen Up."

Like the title says, we are indeed actually playing a few new songs tonight at Detox (around 10pm). For those of you, just joining us, LINUS hasn't recorded/released a new CD in nearly two years. As a band we've been playing shows and practicing new material endlessly, but I rarely let any new songs slip through to a live set.

To be honest, I've been recording and hording the new material for myself for months now. Tonight we will do the unthinkable. Tonight LINUS is ditching the synth. Tonight, as Stan mans the drums, we three will tune up our guitars, turn up our amps, and play an all guitar, all-out set. And I hope you'll join us.

That is all.

-DAVID

Last night I posted two new tracks to our myspace page.

Go give them a listen and tell us what you think. Show on Friday!

UPDATE: Now I'm yanking them from the official linus website and I'm going to put them on my own music site on myspace. I haven't made it yet so I'll post the link later.

Last night we had a great practice. And we're going to start playing new songs at shows.

Last night I was in town way earlier than I thought I'd be so I called up Stan and we went to Indigos for happy hour. We ended up staying for 3 hours... Needless to say, at practice, the drinking showed.

We're finally ready to start pumping out these new songs. They're finally where I want them to be.

Practicing tonight

Tonight we're going to practice at Vibe Asylum. We're working on a few new songs tonight. We're going to try to get a few new songs ready for the next show we play.

"WhiteGraphics for WhiteSouls" and "WhiteMarks on a WhiteWall" I got the double discs in hand!

The other night I went out with a few friends and someone asked me how our second CD was going. The truth was, I couldn't really answer because I didn't know what I wanted on the next CD. It made me start thinking about what we'd put on our next album. So I went home that night and listened through all the material that I've been writing for the past 2 months. I picked out my favorites and compiled the songs that I want to make it onto our next CD. Here they are, burned and ready to demo, full of hot LINUS goodness. The next album will be a double disc.

I'm getting a ZOOM PS -04

Ok, I finally decided to buy some recording gear. After a really long look, and some horror stories from other people, I think I've found what I've been looking for. I'm planning on buying a Zoom PS-04 when I get my next paycheck. My friend found a cheap used one on craigslist.

Zoom says it's "a recording wonder in the palm of your hand." I'll be the judge of that. "The PS-04 is a fully-functional 4-track recorder, mixer, multi-effect device, drum & bass machine. The PS-04 has everything you need to record whenever you want, wherever you want. Take it everywhere you go. When inspiration strikes, the PS-04 is always ready."

I can't wait to get it. It can even run on batteries!

Another week, another practice

Hello everyone. We've been really busy with shows and writing new material. I've been getting together with my friend John and making "nonsense music." I think it's really helping to get over this bout of writers block. We're taking this week and next week off to finalize some of our songs. Thank you so much for all of the support everyone has shown us. We will not let you down.

I shook the hand of Pat Benatar

No where near nervous, last night I met Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo who performed with Honolulu's Pop/Rock Symphony. Endorphin rush, addrenalin high, all physiological entities that provoke excitement, I surely felt it last night. The icing of the cake: I got to meet them both in the back stage and took a picture w/ Pat and Neil!! IT WAS AN AMAZING SHOW! This prime 80's pop-rock vocalist still rocks the stage 20 years later. As if she hasn't aged- her vocals were so prime and thick, it filled the symphony hall like no other. Her show sold out both nights so if you're fortunate and got tickets, you will NOT be disappointed! She seriously "hit me with her best shot." --DMC

Last night we played a show at Detox with K Luvs M

Today I finally got the CSS record from Eric. It's good. I also got the newest Rapture CD. I'm going to listen to them tonight. "Alcohol" is my favorite track so far!

I spent last night after practice writing a song called "I love to eat at King of Siam, when I am in San Francisco..."

So, I wrote this whole song about how I like to eat at King of Siam and random other nonsense, only to find out today that the name of the restaurant is "King of Thai," not "King of Siam." Danmerle and Stan found it, and we went back the next day to dine-in. I think I'll leave the lyrics as "King of Siam." It sounds better. I'm thinking of using it on the DVD menu :)

We had a great practice last night. This new song "Listen Up" is going to be the shit when we play it live. It would sound really good at the Wave... I think we're playing at about half of the volume we used to practice at, and that makes a big difference. Tonight we have a show at Detox with a bunch of bands, check it out.
